Off Season Bollox

Hey gang,

being the off-season, things are probably gonna be pretty quiet in the NRL and, therefore, the NZNRL.

So, we may as well have some random, general interst posts go up here to keep this place ticking over until the All Stars game, early next year…

I have been doing a little research on 5 classic albums that you guys might be interested in.  Here’s some I prepared earlier (these are real folks, no fakees here!)

NUMBER 1:

a159_a7 Here’s one for those times where you just need to hear some feel-good music that really picks you up with a positive message.  Apparently, this record never sold very well – presumably because the music’s, well, not that great and poor old Freddie couldn’t even rely on his friends to buy the album because they were, ummm, dead. Make sure you lock the medicine cabinet before popping this little gem on the stylus…

NUMBER 2 (Appropriately):

record - Mike Crain[4]Mike Crain or, the artist formerly known as Mike Myers – also known as The “Karatist Preacher” brings some of his best work on “God’s Power”. Besides the time-honoured christian standards “God made white right” and “It’s okay, it’s in the name of god”, there’s a particulary stirring 10 minute long grand organ rendition of Jimi Hendrix’s “Voodoo Child”. A good listen for when you want to reaffirm the meaning of life – to smash blocks on your album cover, evidently(?)

NUMBER 3:

kenbyrequest Ken: By request only…  One of those albums that just leaves you wondering how you’ve made it this far without hearing it.  NOW Music reviewer William Hung says “Ken presents a wonderful fusion of Irish folk, UK House and Gangsta Rap to envelope the listener in an unforgattable, exciting soundscape”  Highlights on this one include “Back the f**k up off me you green midget” and the dance anthem “Oh Danny Boy”, Ken’s version includes that infamous 7 minute whistle solo.  Definately one to keep an eye out for, unfortunately it is “by request only” and I have a feeling that if you request this album, you will also be requested to leave the store…

NUMBER 4:

This one is pretty rare and is the Third in the “Pick a more appropriate job” series, preceded by ‘The fingerless guitar player’ and ‘I play my trumpet without any lips!’ Priscilla “Stumpy” Lyons bashes out crunching versions of multiple pop hits including songs by Nirvana, System of a down, slipknot and celine dion.  Interstingly, stumpy later went on to playing bongos for classic rockers Santana, while her legally blind brother Steve, who was also born with only a semi functioning brain went on to referee NRL games and was the lead referee in ‘Calls-against-Canberra’ policy adopted by the NRL.

NUMBER 5:

garydeebradfordGary Dee Bradford rounds out the top 5.  This album was a tribute to the 1986 concert where Gary promised that everyone who turned up to the gig would be named in the album title.  Unfortunately, none of the patrons wanted their names known so Gary resorted to referring to each concert go-er as “you”, as such Gary had named all three in his album title. A little known fact is that Gary was the insperation behind Pxpx (click here), the icon of modern-punk band MXPX. Unfortunately, it sems that the stroke that Gary endured several years prior to this album release has made his speech become slurred a little, although on reflection, this may be due in part to his Jaegermeister habit.

here’s a catchup for the Tuesday trivia:

1) There have only ever been two players that have twice scored 10pts in Rugby League Week’s rating system… Peter Sterling acheived it in 1986/87, which current player acheived his second 10 in round 23 this year?

2) In round 24 this year, new Parramatta boss Paul Osborne said “Sorry mate, it’s the first time in 15 years I had to cheer for a team you weren’t coaching” – who did he saythis to?

3) In 2008, which team won eight of their final ten matches to sneak into the top eight?

4) At the conclusion of Round 25, which rookie fullback had the highest average ‘running metres’ (188.8m/game) , outscoring Gidley, Hayne and Perrett?

5) For which two Australian clubs did Martin Offiah play?

6) Which five current NRL captains have led their teams to Grand Final victory?

7) Aside from the usual pink, which other colour jersey have the NRL referees worn this year?

8) Which former ‘rookie of the year’ moved from playing Rugby League to racing V8 (br)utes?

10) Which coach recently announced his team while dressed in the mascot suit for his club, claiming “At least I now know I have a job for next year”

Well, in true Sandow style, he missed the record… by 5.  I guess he tried one of those shoulder charges that are effective only 2% of the time…

Disappointing Chris, very disappointing indeed.

New Preliminary Finals Header

hey gang – just updated the header for the ‘blog…

I included a quote from Kia Kaha Kiwi coach Craig that really seemed to sum up the spirit of the SuperCoach – spending long periods trying to anticipate our NRL counterparts coaching strategies, reading up on stats, managing injuries and all the rest of it…

Now also seems like a decent time to offer a huge THANKS and CONGRATS to all of our coaches, we have all made it a very interesting season.  I can’t speak for every body, but I know that for myself, this comp has really made the NRL even better and much, much more entertaining.

There have been ups and downs throughout the season, but I think we have all done really well for a bunch of first-timers.

again, well done coaches and good luck to those who remain.
